Q&A: Aveda Experience Center, assistant manager, Allison Day talk about the ‘shopping oasis’ inside the John Hancock Center in downtown Chicago,ILL.

Under the Discover section of the Aveda website, the company says it specializes in hair care, offers plant-based products in skin care, makeup, perfume, and aromas. "Ever since a hairdresser founded Aveda in 1978, our products have been harvested with respect for the earth, in harmony with the web of life," Aveda.com further states.

Chi-Town Beauty Scene: OK,... I would like to know first of all what is the Aveda Experience
Center?

Allison Day: OK, So it's actually pronounced Aveda ( ah-VAY-da ). And a lot of people ... make that mistake. Basically the Aveda Experience Center is something that is corporately owned...throughout the U.S. But at our location ... we're a corporate retail store that provides mini services for our guests before they head out. So we're all about wellness. We do mini hand massages. We do neck and shoulder massages. ... So we perform events at our salon that our guest are able...
to experience product demonstrations fully.

Chi-Town: What type of cosmetic and hairstyling products are available at your center?

Allison Day: So Aveda started off with hair care we're known for hair care -- and that ventured out to... skin care, body care and makeup. ... It's considered a lifestyle Aveda... store. So  that means ...that we have products that range between everything from the head all the way down to your toes. ... It comes from essential oils that are actually 95 percent naturally derived.... Aveda hair care has grown so much... since I would say about 15 years ago that we now have a broad range... for all hair types.

Chi- Town : And what is it about ... the ingredients that's different from ... other retail products distributed by other companies? What sets you all apart?

Allison Day: And a lot of people ask that when they come into our store. ...What makes your product different than my ... Walgreens product? ... Aveda's known for ... natural ingredients. So we don't use any synthetics. ...The difference is that we are a high-end brand that focuses on skin care and hair care and skin care. Not only your skin and hair feels great but also your well- being too. ...

Chi-Town: ... Also another question I have is about the Aveda complimentary wellness ritual renewal services. ... What kind of wellness ritual boosting services...you offer here. …?

Allison Day: OK, So whenever a guest comes in we offer them with a cup of our tea which has liquorice(a confectionery flavored with the extract of the roots in a liquor ice plant) and peppermint. ... We invite them to just kind of browse through and have a little cup of tea.... We welcome them, connect with them figuring out what they’re looking for primarily and we offer them solutions. Offering solutions means that we are recommending at least three products to the guests-meaning that they have a system that they understand what to use at home, and also how to use them at home as well.

Our mini services ... happens before the guests leaves. ... We always say, Before you leave, we would love to treat you to moments of wellness ...and that either ranges from a neck and shoulder massage that we use aromatherapy with. It's called chakra. ...

We also use a product called Blue Oil a lot. ... A lot of people love our Blue Oil because we perform about a 5- minute neck and shoulder massage with it.

They also have the option of having a hand massage. …We also do a hand soak a nice... pressure point with our hand massages. …Then it also varies depending on what products we're featuring. ... … We do... products demos or a makeup touch up before you head out.

Chi-Town: What is it in general about the company itself that sets the company apart from
other companies?

Allison: OK, so Aveda's been around since 1978. ... What sets Aveda apart is that not only are we a high-end brand we're a mini salon. People know that we use natural ingredients but it's also the service that we give to our guests. ...When you come into an Aveda store experience center it’s

kind of like a shopping oasis. You're not expecting something that. … We don't work on commission. We don't work on let's get this product to be bought by every single guest. ...We want to make sure that when a guests walks into Aveda it's because they feel... calm... and they also understand that these products are also good for their hair and good for their wellness to.

... What sets us apart is that we are trained and we go through a lot of training to make sure we
understand how to demonstrate certain products on people. It's pretty exciting when a new guest
to Aveda walks in because it gets us the opportunity to turn them on to the right type of Aveda
guest service.
